Disneyland Paris Planning Guide

After three decades in the motion picture business, Walt Disney created a whole new form of family entertainment in 1955 with the opening of Disneyland park. That’s why Disneyland, Walt’s original park, is the perfect place to debut “Wondrous Journeys.”

The spectacular will also feature an original new song, “It’s Wondrous, ” that promises to capture your heart and spark your imagination. Check out this behind-the-scenes look at the recording session for this song, and hear from some of the creative minds behind this new spectacular:

Throughout “Wondrous Journeys, ” you will embark on an adventure filled with artistry, music, storytelling, and heart as we celebrate the dreamers at Disney Animation who have shared their imagination and talents with the world for one hundred years.

Fond Memories Inspire New Walt Disney World Book

State-of-the-art projection effects will surround you with blank pieces of paper, pencil sketches, and splashes of color, as the artistry of animators breathe life into beloved characters from Mickey Mouse and Bambi to Ariel and Mirabel. And in a thrilling moment of heroism, Baymax soars high above Sleeping Beauty Castle inspiring us all to fight for our dreams.

Special lighting effects, projections, and more carry us on an adventure full of possibilities, excitement, heartache, and determination that help us realize we all face trials and triumphs along the way to making our dreams come true.

Main Street, U.S.A., Sleeping Beauty Castle, the façade of “it’s a small world” and the Rivers of America will turn into an artist’s canvas and bring stories to life all around you. And on select nights, “Wondrous Journeys” will go even bigger with the addition of sparkling fireworks in the sky above Disneyland park.

In this post we walk through a day at Magic Kingdom, from waking up early to make your Lightning Lane reservations (if you’re going that route), to arriving at the park, rope drop, meals, fun things that aren’t rides, cavalcades, the nighttime show, some late night strategy, and everything in between! Let’s get to planning the most Magical day possible!

This is one of our core pieces of Magic Kingdom content. Our Magic Kingdom Genie+ and Lightning Lane Strategy discusses how to use Lightning Lanes to “skip the lines” at Magic Kingdom. Our Magic Kingdom Early Entry and Rope Drop Strategy post focuses on how to start your day at the most magical place on earth. And our Magic Kingdom Rides and Entertainment Guide discusses what you can expect from the different rides we’ll mention in this post.

Disney Debuts 'mickey's Magical Friendship Faire' Show

Magic Kingdom is experiencing two major changes in early 2023. Splash Mountain is now closed. And, as of March 20, TRON is soft opened, with an official opening set for April 4. These changes are not fully incorporated into this post yet. Click here for a separate post focused on what we expect from the park in the first four months of 2023.

This post remains relevant as long as one keeps in mind these caveats. Skip the Splash Mountain parts of this post, and keep in mind you need a plan (either virtual queue or Individual Lightning Lane) for getting on TRON.

What

Putting together a single, perfect, do-everything day at Magic Kingdom is…probably impossible. It’s at least very challenging. There’s too much in the park to easily do in a single day. It’s probably more of a one-and-a-half or two-day park. That said, this is a one day itinerary post, and there are a few approaches you can take to have one very good nearly perfect day at Magic Kingdom.

Where To Find Walt Disney World Characters

You can open your wallet to buy Genie+ and maybe the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lightning Lane. Purchasing one or both of these paid extras keeps the park closer to a one-and-a-half-day park, and you might even feel like you’ve seen it all in a single day.

You can keep your wallet closed and take it easy, accepting that you won’t do everything, setting a list of a dozen or so “must-dos” and building a strategy around that. Or you can keep your wallet closed and still go go go all day long to try and have a very good, or at least exhausting, day.

This post keeps these approaches in mind throughout, and you’ll hopefully get a sense of how your approach—whatever it is—can work at Magic Kingdom.

Virtual Visit To Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom

In the past we gave a single example day at the backbone of our itinerary post. With the variety of options you’ll have (Early Entry / not, Genie+ / not, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Lightning Lane / not) that’s a little unfeasible, particularly at Magic Kingdom.

Day

Instead, we’ll give some examples of how days might look in different scenarios, but mostly this post is about acclimating you with the more general aspects of touring Magic Kingdom (of course, it “generally” does that in about 3000 words, so there’s still some detail I suppose).

At Magic Kingdom, we recommend buying Genie+. We still visit the park regularly without it, but having it removes a handful of stressors. Yes, the service includes over 15 rides at the park, but it’s only about 5-10 rides that you’ll use it for if the rest of your strategy is sound.

How To Pay To Skip The Lines In Disney World — Warning, It's Not Cheap!

Finally, the times and strategies given in this post reflect park hours of 9AM to 9PM with Disney Enchantment playing at 8PM and Early Entry beginning at 8:30AM. If I say “9:30AM”, usually I mean “30 minutes after the park opens.” If the park is open until 11PM when you visit, you’ll have much more time for rides after Enchantment than I did. If it opens at 8AM, you’ll get more done before lunch, or maybe you’ll take an extra mid-morning break. And so on.

This post covers five categories of things to do at Magic Kingdom—rides, other attractions, entertainment, characters, and dining. Dining is pretty straightforward and generally not a major topic on this site, so let’s talk about the other four categories.

First, there are just over twenty rides. I’m not going to list them all here, but in this post I’ll refer a few times to “major” rides, and when I do that I’m talking about Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Flight, Jungle Cruise, and Space Mountain. The first three of these tend to have the longest waits in the park. Space Mountain is usually a top ~six ride by wait time, but it’s one that doesn’t fit too neatly into many of our strategies. During summer, Splash Mountain becomes a major ride, too.

What To Know If You're Planning A Trip To Disneyland, California

Second, there are nine other attractions we’re calling “gap-fillers”: Carousel of Progress, Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, Enchanted Tiki Room, Swiss Family Treehouse, Country Bear Jamboree, Tom Sawyer Island, Liberty Square Riverboat, The Hall of Presidents, Mickey’s PhilharMagic.

Have no / low wait—or a wait that just depends on how long the show takes or when the boat will be back—and that are good for filling midday time when waits
